AqualitySymposia.org, Inc., is a non-profit corporation consisting of public
aquarium industry professionals and commercial sponsors
volunteering their time giving financial support to organize and create resources
for education and development of Water Quality and Life Support Systems. It
is the vision of this group to promote open discussion from all points of view
from those involved in developing, designing, installing, operating and benefiting
from aquatic Life Support Systems. With a focus on aquatic environments produced
by mechanical systems, the intent is to promote animal health.
The Aquality Program includes International Symposia, publication of peer-reviewed manuals, and this web site. The 1st International Symposium for Water Quality and Treatment for Zoos and Aquaria, held in April 2004 in Lisbon, Portugal at the Oceanario de Lisboa, was attended by roughly 170 delegates from 24 countries. Five days were dedicated to the presentation and discussion of 47 topics.
Most manuscripts from the presentations given in Lisbon are in the peer-review process, and when fully edited will comprise the first-ever hardbound Manual on Water Quality and Life Support for Public Aquaria and Zoological Parks. By utilizing an involved peer review process, the goal is to provide a quality resource that represents more than each presenting author’s experience or point of view.
The Manual is due to be published in late 2006 or 2007. As the first manual of its kind, its purpose is to cover basic Water Quality and Life Support topics commonly discussed, encountered or needed to manage an aquatic animal collection. It is the hopes of the Aquality Program that the manual will become an industry resource for training and for the basis of future discussion.
